Culture of Brazil
The culture of Brazil reflects the best of the country’s ethnic and racial diversity, its rich history, and the contributions of individuals such as artists, musicians, filmmakers, and fashion designers.
The music of Brazil was formed from the fusion of different European and African sounds on a base of indigenous Indian elements. It was influenced by African sources in rhythm (such as capoeira) and instrumentation (the berimbau).
The first Europeans to come into contact with Brazilian music were Portuguese settlers who brought their own instruments. The first recorded instance of an instrument being brought to Brazil was in 1556 when King João III requested that guitars be sent to him from Portugal.
The first large-scale production of guitars began in São Paulo in the 1940s. Another locally produced instrument common in Brazil is the cavaquinho or braguinha (a small ukulele).
