Walking and yoga is enlightenment by walking. It’s the ultimate kick! It’s not only a healthy workout, but also a stress-reduction and inner happiness. Yoga walking is your daily pilgrimage to the light. If you truly make this pilgrimage, it will transform you into an ambassador of happiness.
This is the moment when we are in “mindfulness”. By walking, we are able to reconnect with our body, which helps us calm an overactive mind. The repetitive rhythm that combines breathing with our stride organically induces a state of calm. Stressful thoughts, worries and negativity slowly fade away, simply by focusing the mind and being in the present moment.
Do you like Yoga and hiking in natural and relaxing spaces? You’ve come to the right place. Planetazur is here to guide you through places that are best suited to this outdoor activity. It is true that hiking and yoga have many things in common. For example, these two activities have the benefits of calm and zenitude. Being in the great outdoors does more than just increase vitamin D levels… It actually reduces your blood pressure! This is why it is possible to combine the two (hiking and yoga) in unique routes in the south of France in Provence.
We have therefore selected 7 unique places to practice Yoga and Hiking for your vacation.
The 4 places in the south of France to practice Yoga and Hiking
1. The Crests of Tanneron, Var
Les Crêtes du Tanneron has become a popular destination not only for travelers but also for Yoga practitioners. This welcoming spot is an ideal place to practice yoga, participate in a retreat and get in touch with yourself, not only because of its nature but also because of the way the region as a whole approaches life.
In this unique place on the Côte d’Azur, you will have the opportunity to rest your mind by combining Yoga and hiking. Discover the fragrant plants of the Tanneron massif: mimosa of course, but also blueberries and pistachio trees. A walk dotted with delicious scents.
This hike promises you real immersions in nature as well as the exploration of a multitude of places conducive to the practice of yoga.
Warning! If you decide to go there during the mimosa bloom, you will have to be quick! It only takes place between January and March. Hurry up!
2. The Malpasset Dam loop, a place full of energy
Witness to an unprecedented disaster in France in 1959, the Malpasset site houses the remains of the dam whose failure caused the rupture of a wave of more than 40 meters. The event was extremely deadly: the water, on its way, flooded the Malpasset valley to the sea via Fréjus, causing 423 deaths and missing people along its way.
With free access, the Malpasset dam site in Fréjus is both a place of meditation and a place with a unique setting that allows us to measure the contrast between the dizzying coda of the structure and its ridiculous fragility in the face of the elements.
The path leading to the dam is dotted with impressive blocks of reinforced concrete scattered in the bed of the Reyran: these blocks of several tones, deposited by the force of the water several hundred meters downstream of the dam, bear witness to the violence of the disaster.
Several routes allow you to reach the Fréjus dam, during a pleasant familiar walk or a more physical hike. The paths that leave from the car park under the motorway bridge allow you to access either the bottom of the dam or the top of the structure. A route of less than 1 km, sometimes uneven, takes you to the foot of the dam.
The path leading to the Malpasset dam is less uneven. The Malpasset dam loop is a hiking trail of less than 5 km which consists, from the car park, in reaching the bottom of the dam then continuing to the viewpoint which overlooks it. A shortcut also allows you to quickly get from the viewpoint to the foot of the building: a steep path is laid out between two large shaded blocks of eucalyptus.
You are then upstream of the dam and can pass the blocks to find the path leading to the bridge car park. Depending on the time of year and the weather, the Reyran River can be more or less high: if it is almost dry at certain times, it can also be dangerous after heavy rains. But you will have the opportunity to contemplate magnificent landscapes.
3. The Giens peninsula: between land and sea
Its special feature? The combination of land and sea. A hike with unique landscapes. Located in the town of Hyère, in the Var, you can get there by the salt road (only possible in summer) or by the Giens road. Not far from it, are the islands of Porquerolles, Port-Cros and Levant known for their famous seaside resort in summer.
Escape the crowds of big cities by enjoying the sea air and yoga while walking with your family.
With your sneakers, you are ready to go … to tour the peninsula like explorers, on the lookout for the yellow markers that will guide you on this coastal path. This peninsula has some nice surprises in store for you: hidden coves, calanques shaped by nature, or even the formation of caves accessible only by sea. We have chosen a very specific section of the peninsula, the easternmost part.
Starting from the Pointe des Chevaliers, the first part of the hike goes from the pine forest to the beach, where we meet families, hikers, and – more courageous – joggers. Everyone advances at their own pace, and you will need time for photo stops, picnics, swimming breaks…
Winter and summer alike, enjoy this unique place, complete thanks to its natural landscapes as well as the Mediterranean that are offered to you!
4. The lower Gorges of the Verdon, Var and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence
You have certainly heard of the Gorges du Verdon? The result of erosion of thousands of limestone rocks in the High Provenza of the Verdon Riviera. The gorges are now considered the largest canyon in Europe. But then, what are the lower Gorges du Verdon? First, this place is located between the departments of Var and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence.
And the hike that we offer you is a trail of about 9 km that runs along a watercourse regulated by a dam upstream. There is unspoiled nature, wild and not without interest for Yoga enthusiasts.
In fact, this trail is full of nooks and crannies appreciated by Yoga practitioners, because they offer complete plenitude with the outdoor environment that is conducive to self-renewal.
This hike is obviously accessible all the time and benefits from changing landscapes throughout the year. You will see a multitude of different choices this winter!
